ArtBrokers is pleased to announce the release of ten new prints by Ines Kramer. These prints are created from her recent collage paintings.

Here is what Ines Kramer says about her collage imagery. “In my collage based work, I use found images and my own digital photographs. I’m drawn to what’s been abandoned, to what is most often overlooked, or cropped out later at home computers: ordinary buildings, traffic signs, tree limbs, bits of ceiling and floor, a pile of books in the corner. I arrange like and disparate elements in a way that make idiosyncratic sense, creating new landscapes from bits of others. Paint subdues some elements and intesifies others, much like the process of forgetting, remembering, editing the past.”

About Ines Kramer

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, She moved to the Dominican Republic and then the United States as a child. In her travels, She has been deeply influenced by the varied rhythms of speech and movement and frequently changing visual cues, from intense tropical greens to cool silvery grays to the earth tones of her current home in Santa Fe. She has developed the habit of synthesis, absorbing images from all sources and arranging them in new and different ways.

She studied painting in New York City and San Francisco, and in 1992 she began exhibiting her work, gaining national exposure by 1993. Currently, She is represented by galleries and art consultants throughout the country.

ArtBrokers is proud to announce the addition of Tom Gehrig to our portfolio of artists. We are presenting eight images from his latest works, Temporary Monuments and Replica series, in this initial offering.

Impass #1 Giclee 26" x 26"

Tom Gehrig’s enigmatic and beautifully executed paintings set a surreal stage for us to contemplate and admire. They reference the positive side to our human condition that alters our planet in strange and delightful ways.

His most recent works, Temporary Monuments and Replica series, employ props or objects to express a temporal existence. The landscape itself plays the role of a stage for structures, objects and fragments of information.

Gehrig: “On the surface, my work is very reflective and peaceful. I attempt to draw you into my world by painting a romantic and beautiful place … but then I like to zap you! I want you to see another layer. Hopefully, the longer one stays with it, the richer that layer becomes.”

Gehrig received a B.A. (1971) at the California College of the Arts where he studied painting with Arthur Okamura, Peter Shoemaker and Robert Bechtle. He received an M.F.A. (1973) in Intermedia at Mills College, where he worked closely with electronic music composer Robert Ashley. It was this experience that opened the door to experimentation with collage, surreal imagery, theater and performance.

We are expanding Paul Brigham’s portfolio with the addition of four new prints. Two of the images are related to the bird series, one of the images relates to the Deer Park print and we are beginning a new series of landscapes.

Western Bluebird (2) gilcee print 16" x 32"

Paul Brigham’s paintings are inspired by the Japanese tradition of ukiyo-e, “the floating world”, specifically Japanese bird and flower prints. The challenge has been to apply aspects of these traditions in a way that respects them without imitating, and in a way that reflects his own experience as a 21st Century painter living in California. He creates an intuitive, nonlinear narrative through the visual elements of design, symbol and color-fields. Images from the natural world are drawn or silk-screened without deliberation within color-fields to evoke the physical and the spiritual dimensions of landscape.

Brigham’s technique consists of layering paint and silk-screened images and then using sandpaper and other scratching tools to reveal elements from previous layers. This layering technique not only contributes to the depth and texture of the surface, but also captures the effect of the transitory nature underlying all things and making the work appear in a state of flux. The background reflects how the bird may see the world- it is serene and magical and the bird seems right at home there.

Elk (In Autumn) giclee print 25" x 35 1/2"

Brigham has spent a number of years reading Zen philosophy, practicing Tai Chi, and studying Asian Art and aesthetics. Although he has benefited from formal artistic training, he credits these inner studies and the education he continually receives from his personal experience of nature as the true foundation of his art.

The idea of the floating world describes the ephemeral and impermanent quality of our worldly existence. It is Brigham’s intent to share the beauty of this impermanence in his paintings.

Mountain Landscape (With Lake #2) is the first image we are releasing from the Panoramic Series. Paul Brigham describes the new series; “These mountain landscapes attempt to convey the spirit of the mountains rather than the details of a particular place. I was more focused on the ever shifting light and changes brought about by the constant flux of the seasons. The paintings reflect sensations and memories of time spent in the mountains over the years. They represent a sanctuary where one may leave behind the stress of everyday life and refresh one’s soul.

A partial John Maxon bio.

Coming from a very western tradition in Wyoming, John Maxon developed an expansive view of nature and the spiritual essence it imbued. Moving eventually to the San Francisco Bay area, John’s delight in the effects of light and color led him to the decision to become an artist at the young age of 15. His natural ability was encouraged, and at 16 he began figurative art classes with Howard Brodie, the artist well know for his WWII correspondence, drawings and the Watergate trial drawings.

Maxon spent his youthful days painting seriously in the fields behind Stanford University, and was fortunate to be exposed to and to study the works of Nathan Oliviera, Wayne Thiebaud and David Park during those years. He attended San Jose State University, and apprenticed for Sam Richardson and John Battenberg, primarily learning sculpture techniques. It was here that he first witnessed the actual workings of the art world. These great artists, the school of painting, and the movement that was happening in the San Francisco Bay area during the late 60s and early 70s were strong influences to John, and his work began to reflect the style and perceptions of this period.

With Roy DeForest, William T. Wiley, and Wayne Thiebaud in graduate school at the University of California, Davis, John explored many variations of techniques and styles. The exposure to these highly successful, professional, famous artists of that period gave John a stronger awareness of the degree of dedication and strength required to make painting a career. It was during this time that John knew that his sole profession would be as an artist, as aside from teaching art occasionally, this has remained true.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“My artwork intends to connect us with the evocative elements of our surroundings. Each painting is an investigation into the subjective and universal meanings of visual elements surrounding us.”

These fine images by Jesse exhibit his continued experimentation with color and composition. He somehow creates a well organized statement out of the chaos that existed before.
