A Step Forward Giclee 32" x 32"

A Step Forward Giclee 32" x 32"

The Theme of A Step Forward is Women of Science. The text is a compilation of quotes of various scientists, poet, David Whyte, professor of literature, Robert Grudin and a schoolgirl. The book also features a collection of images  showcasing the beautiful details of the work.

The piece is part of The Dressed In Words series and was completed later as a separate commissioned piece. The striding figure and arrow, as well as the title, refer to the progression and forward movement of the sciences.

Embedded in the background are things related to science and tools of discovery, chaos and order, the atom, the DNA molecule, the microscope, scales to weigh and numbers to measure.

The staff of Hermes was thought to be the basis of the Caduceous, the symbol of medicine. A small figure of Hermes is beneath the figure’s left hand. The intertwining snakes of the Caduceous, when taken apart, are identical to the DNA molecule.

Also by Irene Belknap is the book String Therory, published in 2008. It features the series of 8 oil on linen paintings of that name.

A ball of string is the central theme of these paintings. String, thread, weaving, webs and knots are all metaphorical and mythological motifs. Belknap plays on the associations and mythical connections between string/thread and human consciousness.
